Prey remains in middens of Octopus maya from Campeche, Mexico

The remains of 2,385 prey found in 210 Octopus maya middens in shallow waters from four adjacent localities around Lerma, Campeche, Mexico were analyzed. Bivalve mollusks accounted for 90.7% of all prey and occurred in 98.6% of middens. They were mainly represented by Modiolus squamosus (32% by number, N and 44.8% by frequency of occurrence, FO) and Chione elevata (21.9%N, 64.8%FO). Comparison between localities for 93 dens with > 7 prey items did not show differences in octopus diet regarding prey abundances. O. maya population is formed by mostly generalist individuals (78%) mixed with specialist individuals which dominate in a particular locality. Differential persistence of prey remains in middens caused by currents, removing lighter crustaceans and leading to bivalve overestimation in octopus diet is recognized. Prey sizes were small, mostly in the 10–35 mm size range, suggesting that this octopus is a time minimizing forager which feeds on abundant, small prey found around the den. Hard-shelled bivalves were drilled in different shell areas depending on the prey species.
