<p>The present paper assesses an unpublished Commentary that was submitted to the journal <i>Science</i> by Hermann J. Muller that critiques an article in <i>Science</i> by the noted Johns Hopkins University biostatistician, Raymond Pearl, claiming that cigarette smoking reduces longevity in a dose-dependent manner. The paper assesses the dispute, the role of the <i>Science</i> editor in adjudicating the issue and how Muller addresses the issues raised. The manuscript was of particular interest, since Muller raised the question of whether smoking could increase lifespan. The paper offers new insight into the range of Muller’s intellectual activities and attempts to integrate such novel developments within his career as the most prominent advocate of the linear non-threshold dose–response model for hereditary and subsequently for cancer risk assessment.</p>
