Assessment of renewable energy development in Africa using the SWOT analysis model: the cases of South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Kenya

As the world drifts away from the dominance of fossil fuel-fired generators which is in line with the Paris Agreement of net-zero carbon emission by 2050, many countries around the world have now intensified effort in achieving this clean energy goal. This research aims to assess the developmental strides made in promoting renewable energy (RE) technologies in selected major African countries as they strive to meet the ambitious zero carbon emission goal. To carry out this assessment, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) model is utilized. The representative countries under study are carefully selected from major region (Eastern, Western, Northern, and Southern) of Africa. The findings of this research reveal that Africa is still a long way from meeting its RE target as compared with other continents, as more grit and zest is needed by African leaders in order to achieve its RE goal. Furthermore, it was revealed that South Africa was the best-performed country in terms of RE development, while Nigeria was the least-performing country. In addition, all countries considered had RE policy in place; however, an effective RE monitoring is lacking as no country met its RE targets and timeline. Therefore, enforcing effective RE monitoring and improving security will be key to enhancing RE development in Africa.
