Summary <p>This study investigated the prevalence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia in patients with end-stage knee osteoarthritis (OA) undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA).</p> Methods <p>In this retrospective cohort study, all patients with end-stage knee OA who underwent TKA between April 2022 and May 2023 were included. Preoperative appendicular lean mass index and bone mineral density were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.</p> Results <p>A total of 1755 patients (mean age, 73.5 ± 6.8&#xa0;years) underwent TKA, with women comprising the majority (1554 patients, 88.5%). The prevalence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia was significantly higher in women than in men. Osteoporosis affected 51.9% of women versus 21.4% of men, and sarcopenia affected 42.2% of women versus 36.3% of men. The prevalence of osteosarcopenia was more than twice as high in women (25.9%) as in men (11.4%).</p> Conclusion <p>Osteosarcopenia was present in 24.1% of patients with end-stage knee OA undergoing TKA, exceeding rates in the general population. The condition was particularly prevalent among elderly female patients.</p>

Summary
