DNA profiling of crime traces provides a fundamental contribution in present-day casework. Apart from secretion stains, latent touch DNA traces play a central role. However, the analysis of touch traces is associated with varying, unpredictable success rates.
ObjectivesThe present study aimed to demonstrate the crime relevance of touch DNA. The objective was to determine the proportions of touch DNA and secretion stains from property crime scenes that have been attributed to a suspect.
Materials and methodsFor this study, DNA typing results for crime scene traces (except capital crimes and sexual offences) examined from 1 January 2024 to 25 October 2025 were retrospectively evaluated. If a suspect’s DNA profile was available, it was compared with the evidence sample. A biostatistical analysis via likelihood ratio calculation was executed after profile analogies were observed between the suspect and the trace DNA.
ResultsA total of 14,490 traces were investigated with 8986 of these being processed for short tandem repeat (STR) typing. A number of 484 traces were found to match the DNA profiles of suspects and underwent biostatistical analysis. Approximately 87% of these traces belonged to touch DNA samples, while around 13% resulted from secretion stains. The majority of profiles (78%) leading to German DNA database matches were obtained from touch DNA samples. Around 90% of the traces showing matching alleles with the crime suspect resulted in mixed profiles. One third of the touch DNA profiles displayed a major contributor congruent to the suspect’s profile.
ConclusionThe present data demonstrate a large percentage of touch DNA traces at crime scenes, with their profiles leading to matches with suspects’ DNA profiles.
