Background <p>Autopsies play a&#xa0;key role in determining causes of death, ensuring medical quality and advancing biomedical research. During the COVID-19 pandemic, their scientific value gained renewed attention. In this context, the National Autopsy Network (NATON) was established in 2020 as an interdisciplinary platform for disease-related postmortem research in Germany.</p> Objective <p>The aim of this article is to present the structure, achievements and future perspectives of the network beyond the acute phase of the pandemic.</p> Material and method <p>The development of NATON is outlined based on consortium documentation, publications, registry data and institutional developments, tracing its transformation from a&#xa0;pandemic-related emergency structure to a&#xa0;sustainable research infrastructure.</p> Results <p>Currently, NATON includes institutes from over 90% of German university hospitals and brings together forensic medicine, pathology and neuropathology in a&#xa0;unique network. In total 2780 complete autopsy datasets and information on more than 67,000 postmortem tissue samples were centrally recorded. New disease-specific registry modules, on infectious diseases, adverse drug reactions, cancer, intensive care courses, and sudden cardiac death, should expand the scope of research. Forensic medicine makes a decisive contribution to the network’s development through its high autopsy frequency and specialized expertise.</p> Conclusion <p>The German National Autopsy Network has become established as a&#xa0;leading infrastructure for autopsy-based research and as a&#xa0;tool for pandemic management and preparedness, extending beyond COVID-19.</p>

Background

Autopsies play a key role in determining causes of death, ensuring medical quality and advancing biomedical research. During the COVID-19 pandemic, their scientific value gained renewed attention. In this context, the National Autopsy Network (NATON) was established in 2020 as an interdisciplinary platform for disease-related postmortem research in Germany.

Objective

The aim of this article is to present the structure, achievements and future perspectives of the network beyond the acute phase of the pandemic.

Material and method

The development of NATON is outlined based on consortium documentation, publications, registry data and institutional developments, tracing its transformation from a pandemic-related emergency structure to a sustainable research infrastructure.

Results

Currently, NATON includes institutes from over 90% of German university hospitals and brings together forensic medicine, pathology and neuropathology in a unique network.
