Background and research question <p>The COVID-19 pandemic led to an unprecedented suspension of on-campus teaching and a&#xa0;shift to digital formats. The aim of this study was to investigate short-term and long-term pandemic-related changes in forensic medicine teaching and examination formats in Germany.</p> Material and methods <p>Data collection was performed via an online survey on forensic medicine teaching and examination formats in the human medicine study program at the university institutes in Germany before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The response rate was 82%.</p> Results <p>Before the pandemic traditional teaching formats, such as seminars, practical courses and lectures in presence dominated. During the pandemic there was a&#xa0;shift towards digital teaching formats such as online lectures, postmortem examination videos and e‑learning modules. After the pandemic there was a&#xa0;widespread return to the previous teaching formats, predominantly in presence. In the predominantly written presence examinations, an increase in the utilization of electronic means is noted after the pandemic.</p> Discussion <p>The resumption of practical teaching sessions, particularly for the postmortem examination of corpses, highlights the indispensability of this training format. The extensive return to classroom lectures speaks for a&#xa0;more classical teaching of the basics. Nevertheless, it was shown that the pandemic led to an increase towards modern university didactic teaching formats, such as e‑learning concepts, autopsy video recordings and competency-oriented formats.</p>

Background and research question

The COVID-19 pandemic led to an unprecedented suspension of on-campus teaching and a shift to digital formats. The aim of this study was to investigate short-term and long-term pandemic-related changes in forensic medicine teaching and examination formats in Germany.

Material and methods

Data collection was performed via an online survey on forensic medicine teaching and examination formats in the human medicine study program at the university institutes in Germany before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The response rate was 82%.

Discussion
