Following the systematic experimental study on the DNA content of lever marks and a retrospective evaluation of the actual findings in routine examinations over the previous 3‑year period, the following questions were investigated in a standardized prospective study approach.
With what frequency can forensically usable DNA profiles be detected on the lever mark and in its vicinity using a standardized more comprehensive preservation concept?
Are these traces attributable to a transfer from the person to the tool and then from the tool to the contact surface (secondary transfer) or to a direct transfer (primary transfer), e.g. by supporting/grasping or forced exhalation?
Study design and methodsThe observation period covered a 6-month corridor in the dark season favored by burglary offenders (experience shows that this is from the beginning of autumn to the beginning of spring). The investigation material was limited to the offences of domestic burglary and daytime burglary. In addition to the actual lever track, the scope of the investigation was extended to the neighbouring area and samples were secured in the sections “lever track”, “area above the lever track” and “area below the lever track”.
ResultsA total of 1133 traces were analyzed. There were 1005 negative results, 88 mixed traces that could not be used for forensic purposes, 12 mixed traces that could be used for forensic purposes and 28 traces with a homogeneous DNA profile. In two cases a match (hit) was obtained after comparison with the DNA analysis databank (DAD), one hit in the lever track itself and one below the lever track. The topographical distribution of the positive findings indicates that the causal mechanisms could be transmission by the tool during the levering process as well as other mechanisms, such as direct contact with the hand or an exhalation process.
