Objective

Can intraoral scanners be used in forensic medicine for documenting the postmortem dental status?

Material and methods

A TRIOS 3 intraoral scanner (3Shape, Copenhagen, DK) was used to obtain a dental profile from a total of 24 corpses in various stages of decomposition. In addition, in each case a conventional dental profile was recorded. The two methods then were compared.

Results

The generation of a postmortem dental status using the TRIOS 3 intraoral scanner provided advantages over the conventional method, depending on various factors. Restrictions were found in cases of pronounced rigor mortis, severe maggot infestation, or loosened teeth due to decomposition.

Conclusion

Under certain conditions, intraoral scanners are suitable for generating a postmortem dental status. Moreover, intraoral scanners as a supplement in the autopsy room could have the potential to develop new dental identification parameters beyond the simple documentation of the dental status in comparison of antemortem data from dental practices.
