<p>This paper investigates an experimental study of ultrasonic shot peening (USP) treatment applied to laser-welded (LW) 304 austenitic stainless steel (ASS), for analyzing the effect of each on mechanical characteristics. Tensile test was initially performed to determine the principal mechanical properties of both as-welded and welded (LW) + (USP) material. The residual stress distributions were then measured using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique according to the sin<sup>2</sup>ψ method, in three different orientations (longitudinal along the weld line, transversal to the weld, and diagonal) for the two previous cases. Finally, the following results of FWHM were taken into account, to be further interpreted with the microhardness measurements and microstructure images, obtained subsequently for both (LW) and (LW + USP) cases.</p>
