Critical review of “Optimisation by Taguchi’s Method of the Electrical Parameters and Geometry of an S32205 Duplex Weld”

This paper critically reviews the article “Optimisation by Taguchi’s Method of the Electrical Parameters and Geometry of an S32205 Duplex Weld.” The study applies the Taguchi method using an L4 orthogonal matrix to optimize welding parameters, focusing on current intensity and travel speed. The optimization relies on the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio, ANOVA, and a desirability-based selection method. Our analysis identifies key shortcomings. The use of only two factors at two levels limits the study’s scope. The absence of experiment replication undermines the reliability of S/N ratio calculations and desirability analysis. Additionally, inconsistencies in data presentation, table references, and p-value interpretation reduce clarity. The desirability method includes variables with low R2 values, weakening optimization reliability. Moreover, the validation phase lacks statistical rigor, as deviations between theoretical and practical values were not tested for significance. While the study demonstrates an interesting application of Taguchi’s method in welding, improvements in experimental design, replication, and statistical validation are needed to strengthen its findings.
