Investigation of coupling structure influence on MDO strategies

In the past two decades, various multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) strategies have been developed to optimize multidisciplinary systems. Although numerous studies have been proposed to construct appropriate MDO strategies based on designed problems, selecting a strategy for different coupling structures remains challenging. This paper investigates the influence of coupling structures on the performance of MDO strategies through a novel classification. The methods handling coupling variables in MDO strategies are analyzed. Then, the coupling structure classification is presented based on the characteristics of task flow in the extended design structure matrix (XDSM). The performance of MDO strategies is assessed by comparing optimization effectiveness and computational efficiency through well-designed examples. The results reveal that the effectiveness of an MDO strategy is closely linked to the coupling structure, with different strategies’ selection under specific requirements. Conclusively, a suggestion for decomposing complex coupling structures into the proposed classification is presented, establishing the connection between coupling structures and MDO strategies.
