Algorithm literacy as a moderator of media trust: a theory of planned behavior approach
摘要
Using a mixed methods approach, we surveyed 780 adults and conducted follow-up interviews with 21 participants in China, to explore cognitive and behavioral factors shaping media trust. Results show that algorithm literacy and news literacy significantly predict trust in mainstream media, especially when considered interactively. However, these factors do not significantly influence trust in social media, suggesting the importance of platform-specific dynamics. Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we find that algorithm literacy enhances attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, which subsequently relate to trust in mainstream media. Interview data further reveal that negative attitudes, norms, and perceived behavioral control surrounding social media undermine trust in them, even among news- and algorithm-literate individuals. This study advances TPB by illuminating how algorithm literacy and TPB jointly shape trust in the media.
