<p>This study examines how institutional discourse frames the adoption of AI in project management and how these framings construct professional identity. Through discourse analysis of documents from major project management institutions, the study identifies how AI is associated with expectations related to competence, responsibility, and adaptability. It outlines three identity imaginaries, referred to as the novice, the practitioner, and the expert, which reflect different levels of engagement with AI. The findings show that institutional discourse actively constructs what it means to be a competent and legitimate professional in AI-integrated environments. By revealing how language links technological adoption to ethical responsibility and collective imagination, the study contributes to understanding how institutional language shapes emerging meanings of professionalism and competence in the context of AI integration.</p>
