AI dependence and researchers’ job anxiety: dual-path buffering effects of organizational readiness and individual mindfulness

As AI deeply integrates into scientific research, it boosts efficiency but also triggers anxiety over technological dependence among researchers. Drawing on Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study explores how researchers’ dependence on AI tools induces job anxiety via STARA awareness (i.e., the perception of job replacement by Smart Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Algorithms) and examines the dual-path buffering effects of organizational AI readiness and mindfulness. A survey of 552 Chinese researchers with moderated mediation analysis (Hayes’ PROCESS Model 29) shows: Dependence on AI directly exacerbates job anxiety (β = 0.192, p < 0.01) and indirectly does so via partial mediation of STARA awareness (indirect effect = 0.103, 29.03% of total effect); organizational AI readiness and mindfulness buffer these associations respectively from external and individual levels, with their synergy significantly weakening AI dependence’s impact on anxiety (β = −0.141, p = 0.0145). This study uncovers the cognitive mechanism converting technological dependence into emotional stress, validates the “organization-individual” dual-path buffering model, and offers insights for balancing technological empowerment and researchers’ mental health.
