Associations between generative artificial intelligence usage, Job Demands, Job Control and Burnout

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) technology resources are being used by workers to complete tasks, but little is known about how these new technologies may affect workers’ wellbeing. The Job Demands-Resources model suggests that some resources can act as a buffer between Job Demands and negative wellbeing outcomes, including Burnout. One such theoretically protective resource is Job Control, and it was hypothesised that GAI resources may be positively associated with Job Control, which could potentially indicate GAI usage is negatively associated with Job Demands and Burnout experiences. A survey of Australian workers (N = 197) measured their usage of GAI in the previous six months, and measures of Job Demands, Job Control and Burnout. The results showed a significant, positive association between workers’ GAI usage and Job Control, but no significant associations were identified between GAI usage and Job Demands or Burnout. These findings challenge some of the existing literature on the relationship between Job Control, Job Demands and Burnout. However, the results indicate that the factor of workers’ GAI resource usage is not significantly positively or negatively related with their Burnout experiences or Job Demands. Given the rapidly evolving nature of GAI resources, replicating this study within specific worker populations and utilising alternate theoretical frameworks would help increase our understanding of the benefits and risks GAI technology resources present for worker wellbeing.
