A scoping review of Arab journalists' perspectives and applications of artificial intelligence
摘要
We conducted a scoping review of the available empirical research studies that empirically examined Arab journalists’ uses of artificial intelligence (AI) at their workplace. Searching in different Arabic scholarly databases, we identified 28 relevant research papers. We then systematically analyzed these studies by classifying them into their common areas such as their methods and major findings. The findings show that the most common method used was the survey followed by interviews as well as content analysis and finally participant observation. There were eight main AI tools referenced, and Egypt remains the most researched country followed by Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The most examined medium was the news website though it was not always clear since many Arabic research papers only mentioned “news organization” without any specification. As for the main AI applications, we identified over 20 applications and the most frequent ones were data analysis/fact-checking; research, collection, filtering, and linking of information; content writing and editing automated; and chat and message management. The review also synthesizes the findings of these studies by highlighting the negative and positive impact of AI use in the journalism industry of the Arab world, for there is an agreement that AI’s positive impact is more felt than its negative influence. The paper highlights the shortcomings of some papers as well as the available challenges of AI use for countries located in the Global South.
