摘要

Introduction

Multimodal treatment approaches for patients suffering from arthrofibrosis include both nonsurgical and surgical strategies. Pharmacotherapy remains controversial as no standardized treatment has yet been established.

Material and methods

This article gives an overview of possible pharmaceuticals that are used in the treatment of arthrofibrosis. Various drug classes for adjuvant pharmacological treatment of arthrofibrosis are presented. Adequate pain management, preferably with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), forms the basis of treatment. Antioxidants and vitamins can reduce oxidative stress with a low side effect profile. The antifibrotic properties of corticosteroids and propranolol are most commonly utilized; however, these substances can only be used off-label.

Conclusion

The use of different substances should be individually assessed and applied in a stage-appropriate manner as an adjuvant measure to other therapeutic approaches.
