摘要

First-time patellar dislocation is a frequent injury of the knee joint, particularly among young physically active individuals. This injury typically results from a sudden twisting trauma or direct impact to the knee and usually leads to a lateral dislocation. In addition to the trauma itself various risk factors, such as patella alta or trochlear dysplasia, significantly increase the likelihood of a redislocation. Therefore, in addition to the clinical examination, a detailed medical history is crucial for diagnostic purposes to assess the risk factors. This is supported by imaging techniques, such as X‑ray imaging and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify accompanying injuries and to determine anatomical risk factors. The goal after primary relocation of the patella and possibly addressing the accompanying injuries is always to prevent a redislocation. Following an algorithm-based assessment of the redislocation risk, the decision is made between further conservative or surgical treatment options. Early and appropriate treatment is essential to ensure the long-term function of the knee joint and to minimize the risk of recurrent dislocations and chronic instability.
