<p>Preterm birth represents one of the greatest challenges in obstetrics. Preterm births before the 34th week of gestation in particular are associated with a clearly elevated perinatal morbidity and mortality. Screening for improvement of prevention and treatment is therefore meaningful. Infections and an imbalance of the vaginal microbiota are key risk factors for a preterm birth. This article summarizes the current state of knowledge on screening and treatment of vaginal infections and discusses the possible preventive role of probiotics during pregnancy.</p>
