<p>Arterial hypertension (AH) and preeclampsia (PE) are complications of pregnancy that are associated with both acute and long-term risks for mother and child. New knowledge of their pathophysiology, e.g., regarding the relevance of sodium intake and the diversity of the gut microbiome as well as the role of the immune system also in chronification of AH, have led to a&#xa0;better understanding of sex-specific phenotypes of cardiovascular risk such as PE. This review gives insight into the etiology and pathophysiology of AH and PE. Under consideration of the 2024 guideline on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, treatment algorithms are presented.</p>
