In Germany, there are about 20,000 women infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV infection has become a disease with an almost normal life expectancy due to the use of efficient antiviral therapy. HIV-positive women are entitled to gynecological (screening) examinations as are noninfected women, also with respect to contraception, pregnancy, reproductive medicine, or the menopause. Knowledge about the infection and an interdisciplinary treatment are crucial for providing competent care for HIV-positive women. Depending on the life stage and -planning, it is necessary to proceed with individualized gynecologic consultation, care, and examination. Besides regular screening, this also includes an intensified approach regarding increased risk for dysplasia, cervix and anal carcinoma, as well as a specialized prematernity care to prevent mother-to-child-transmission.
