The Committee on Reproductive Self-Determination and Reproductive Medicine was established in March 2023 and was tasked with examining within 1 year whether abortion could be regulated outside of the Criminal Code (Working Group 1, WG1) and whether egg donation and/or altruistic surrogacy could be legalized (WG2). The committee had a total of 18 members, 9 per working group. This overview only reports on the results and recommendations of WG2, which came to the conclusion that egg donation could be legalized under strict conditions. Altruistic surrogacy is viewed more critically but could also be legalized under certain conditions. Ultimately, it remains unclear whether the current government will adopt the recommendations and pass them into new or amended legislation.
