The induction of labor has evolved over the past few decades. This article explores the medical foundations, current indications and advances, particularly in the realm of outpatient induction of labor. Individual risk-benefit analyses are crucial and guidelines (Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany, AWMF register nr. 015/088) provide recommendations. Outpatient induction of labor offers advantages, such as resource utilization and patient satisfaction. Mechanical methods (balloon catheters, hygroscopic dilators) and pharmacological approaches (dinoprostone, misoprostol) are discussed. Balloon catheters are considered safe and effective and suitable for outpatient induction of labor. Prostaglandins and castor oil are not recommended in the outpatient setting due to the associated risks. In summary, outpatient induction of labor is feasible in selected cases but requires meticulous planning and individual consideration of various aspects.
