<p>The press in totalitarian states offers only a&#xa0;limited overview of social and health realities. However, an analysis of the three most important newspapers in the German Democratic Republic (GDR; <i>Neues Deutschland</i>, <i>Neue Zeit</i>, <i>Berliner Zeitung</i>) provides insight into how propaganda ultimately attempts in vain to conceal problems in the healthcare system and highlight the apparent triumph of socialism.</p>
