The coadministration of vaccines is relevant in practice. It saves time and contributes to the fastest possible vaccination protection. The German Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) also explicitly recommends it. For many coadministrations data demonstrate innocuous immunogenicity and tolerability (described in section 4.5 of the product information). This information is product-specific but also transferable to other similar vaccines. If no data on an intended coadministration are mentioned in the product information of the respective vaccines, it is nevertheless basically always possible. Local vaccine reactions are vaccine-specific and independent of whether one or more vaccines are administered. If two vaccines are administered at least 2 cm apart into the same limb, the rate and additive duration of painful local reactions are even lower and shorter than if these vaccines are injected at two different times. Systemic adverse events (e.g., headache or fatigue) are often coincident and not causally related to the respective vaccine. Many of these events following vaccination therefore occur less frequently after coadministration (1 follow-up observational period) than with sequential administration (> 1 follow-up observational period). As fewer vaccination appointments are required with coadministration, the cumulative probability of fever following vaccination is also lower than with separate administration.
The Committee supports the explicit STIKO recommendation of coadministration of two or more vaccinations during a single physician visit. This is in the best interest of patients because it ensures the timely implementation of current vaccination recommendations and closes existing vaccination gaps as early as possible. The advantages of coadministration of upcoming vaccinations should be highlighted during the prevaccination counselling.
