Sehstörungen im Kindesalter
摘要
Visual impairment in childhood is not uncommon but it is sometimes an insufficiently recognized problem in clinical practice and can lead to potentially severe and irreversible impairment of the general development of affected children. Under normal conditions all anatomical structures of the eyes are fully developed at birth in mature neonates. This is the basic requirement for the start of functional visual development after a short interval of a visual resting in the first 4–6 weeks of life. In this early phase, the development of the sensory impressions of touch, smell and taste are given priority. The subsequent visual development and maturation of the first 2 years of life is crucial and cannot be rectified later in school age or adulthood, because the neuroplasticity decreases with age. Early diagnosis of childhood eye diseases and consequent treatment are therefore essential to prevent irreversible impairment of visual function, such as in amblyopia.
