<p>Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are widespread and cause numerous new cases of cancer each year, particularly genital and oropharyngeal cancers. The HPV vaccination has been available since 2006 and is recommended in Germany from the age of 9 years.&#xa0;Nevertheless, vaccination rates remain below the targeted goals. Early vaccination must precede sexual contact to elicit optimal protective effects. Studies show that the highest effectiveness is achieved when the vaccination series is completed before the 14th&#xa0;birthday. Children vaccinated early exhibit particularly strong immune responses and stable antibody levels. Linking the vaccination to routine childhood check-ups can improve coverage. Furthermore, the vaccination protects not only girls but also boys against HPV-associated diseases, such as anal and penile cancers. International registry studies confirm a&#xa0;significant reduction in HPV-related disease burden where the vaccination rate is high. Early HPV vaccination provides clear immunological, epidemiological and organizational advantages. A&#xa0;nationwide check-up at ages 9–10 years represents an effective opportunity for vaccination counselling and administration.</p>
