The chronic intestinal failure associated with short bowel syndrome-is a potentially life-threatening systemic disease. The aim of this summary is to provide a practical overview of the disease. The first part provides general information on the definition, epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology. The second part describes the interdisciplinary intestinal rehabilitation treatment approach, which could improve the prognosis for survival and enteral autonomy. The third section covers specific aspects on the management, complications and prognosis.
