摘要

In emergency medicine physicians are particularly required to quickly assess the needs of presenting patients and to initiate appropriate interventions. When there is a potential risk to a child’s well-being, especially in cases of suspected child sexual abuse, healthcare professionals often report an immediate sense of uncertainty and even being unable to cope with how to act. This is predominantly due to a lack of routine and experience with the issue, fear of doing something wrong and thereby complicating (legal) clarification and the emotional distress associated with the topic. Given the structure of emergency care units, there is often no immediate possibility to delegate the case to a more experienced colleague or institution (e.g., regional child protection ambulance service). It is therefore essential to have at least a basic understanding of the necessary actions and pathways for further assessment.
