<p>The close connection between heart and kidney diseases was described as early as the nineteenth&#xa0;century. Today it is evident that both organ systems are closely linked by hemodynamic, hormonal and inflammatory mechanisms. The cardiorenal syndrome describes acute or chronic dysfunction in one organ that adversely affects the other. Due to the close association to metabolic diseases, the concept of cardiorenal metabolic syndrome is becoming increasingly more established. In addition to children and adolescents with primary cardiac or nephrological diseases, numerous chronic conditions are associated with an elevated risk of premature cardiovascular and renal damage. Early identification of risk groups, structured screening and interdisciplinary care along with the establishment of new biomarkers and imaging techniques, are essential in order to reduce long-term cardiorenal morbidity and mortality. In this context, the establishment of specialized cardiorenal units and the rapid development and approval of new medications, such as sodium-glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) receptor agonists, play a&#xa0;pivotal role.</p>
