The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens represents a significant challenge for the healthcare system and complicates the medical treatment of affected children and adolescents. An understanding of resistance mechanisms, a profound knowledge of the frequency of individual multidrug-resistant pathogens, possibilities of detection and targeted antimicrobial treatment as well as maintaining close interdisciplinary collaboration are essential for effective treatment of these infections. This continuing medical education (CME) article provides the readership with an up to date overview of multidrug-resistant pathogens and conveys important foundations for essential everyday principles for the clinical practice. The objective is to support healthcare professionals in making informed decisions to ensure the best possible care for patients.
