摘要

Children and adolescents identifying as transgender experience increased mental morbidity without appropriate treatment and are more likely to face discrimination and violence. Medical treatment options, including puberty blockers, gender-affirming hormone therapy, psychotherapy and surgical interventions can enhance their well-being in their self-determined gender. Access to these interventions is associated with improved quality of life and a lower rate of associated mental morbidity, at least in the medium term. Therefore, such treatment options should be considered ethically justified. Future research on long-term outcomes is urgently required. As the body of scientific evidence grows, the ethical appraisal must be continuously updated.

A prerequisite for any intervention is a thorough prior interdisciplinary counselling of the individuals and their legal guardians, thereby ensuring that the decision was made autonomously with sufficient maturity.
