<p>Medication errors represent a&#xa0;significant danger to patients of all age groups; however, due to the necessity for considering age-specific dosage recommendations and contraindications as well as the need for individual dose calculations, higher error rates are consistently observed in children compared to adults, independent of the field of care. A&#xa0;significant difference from the care of adults is that even with a&#xa0;great deal of experience, a&#xa0;familiarity with a&#xa0;typical dose cannot develop as in pediatric medicine, patients weigh between less than 1 kg and more than 100 kg. Particularly in emergency situations involving children, most caregivers also experience a&#xa0;high level of psychological stress and multiple potentially dangerous medications must be administered in a&#xa0;short period of time. Even a&#xa0;misplaced comma in the calculation of an adrenaline dose can lead to a&#xa0;life-threatening error. This review analyzes the process of medication administration, identifies typical pitfalls, shows successful interventions and essentially presents the recommendations of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) S2k guidelines on “Medication safety in pediatric emergencies”.</p>
