The Cannabis Act (CanG) came into force on 1 April 2024. It regulates the “controlled supply of cannabis to adults for recreational purposes”.
Research questionHealth damage caused by cannabis use in childhood and adolescence and its treatment while assessing the effects of the legal changes.
Material and methodsEvaluation of the scientific literature on impact research and clinical disorders, epidemiological trends and healthcare research in legalization states, analysis of the healthcare situation and treatment concepts in Germany, description of needs.
Results and discussionIn the USA legalization has contributed to a decreasing risk perception of the health damage caused by use and an increase in risky patterns of use, including among adolescents. Utilization of cannabis-related emergency and addiction treatment has risen sharply. Similar developments are now to be feared for Germany.
