Children born prematurely are significantly more likely to have problems with language and communication development across all subgroups. These affect both expressive and receptive language skills, the use of language in social communication and reading skills. The mostly complex constellation of correlates of language developmental problems includes neurological and auditory factors as well as socioeconomic factors and dysfunctional parent-child communication. Restrictions in language development often have negative effects on learning, social relationships and mental health. The stability of language developmental problems is already high from early infancy. Early detection and continuous surveillance of language and communication skills are therefore a crucial component of aftercare programs. Preventive intervention before and after discharge from hospital is effective if it continuously supports the development of responsive parent-child relationships and the well-being of parents.
