<p>A sufficient anastomosis for reconstruction after colorectal surgery is a&#xa0;fundamental prerequisite for surgical success and in certain clinical situations also for the oncological outcome of the patient. Despite a&#xa0;history of colorectal surgery that is more than 200 years old, changing trends then and now with sometimes contradictory evidence and a&#xa0;large number of publications, make it difficult to make a&#xa0;clear statement regarding a&#xa0;preferred procedure for restoring continuity and preventing anastomotic leaks. This continuing medical education (CME) article aims to evaluate various procedures with respect to the currently available evidence.</p>
