The qualification of complaints and suffering and the associated impairment in the quality of life is often difficult for patients suffering from fecal incontinence. The classification of fecal incontinence into subtypes or grades only partially reflects the actual symptoms of patients. Various scoring systems have therefore been developed to enable an objective comparison of the patients’ subjective symptoms. The aim is to determine the success of conservative or surgical treatment based on the symptoms and impairment of the quality of life of the affected patients using simple, objective and reproducible questions and to summarize them in a score. The following manuscript explains the most commonly used scoring systems and presents the advantages and disadvantages of each score.
