摘要

Electro-stimulation acupuncture (ESA) combines classical acupuncture (MA) with electrical stimulation to enhance and extend its effects. ESA has outstanding analgesic potency and demonstrates neuroregenerative and rehabilitative effects. Its physiological mechanisms are well understood and include peripheral, spinal and supraspinal stimulus processing. While the application of ESA is simple, it does require basic electrotherapeutic knowledge. The stimulation points are selected according to traditional Chinese acupuncture criteria, modern acupuncture concepts, or neurophysiological criteria.

This article provides a detailed overview of the electrophysiological principles, indications and contraindications of ESA, as well as its practical application.
