Synthesis of Subarrayed Irregular Phased Arrays by a Novel Approach

Irregular phased arrays have recently attracted a lot of interest. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for synthesizing the irregular phased array based on subarray partition. The proposed algorithm is implemented in two stages. In the first stage, a shaped flat-top pattern within scanning range is synthesized via convex programming, and the reference excitations are also determined. In the second stage, an adjacent element search algorithm based on excitation match principle is utilized to obtain the subarray tilling configuration and the high-directivity pattern is finally achieved through convex programming. Compared with the existing techniques, the proposed algorithm can obtain the subarray locations more rapidly and yield a pattern with higher directivity under the same peak sidelobe level. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
