Sums of Squares on Hypersurfaces

We show that the Pythagoras number of rings of type \({\mathbb {R}}[x,y, \sqrt{f(x,y)}]\) $\mathbb{R}[x,y,\sqrt{f(x,y)}]$ is infinite, provided that the polynomial f(x, y) satisfies some mild conditions.
