摘要

Tsunami which is a kind of long wavelength ocean wave can be destructive for a shore. So an early prediction of such an event is crucial to ensure safety of human lives and infrastructures located at a coastal region. The sea shore between Chennai and Nagapattinam houses important infrastructures including the nuclear facilities located at Kalpakkam. The incident of Fukushima pointed out the requirement of advance prediction of a tsunami. In this work, a methodology is proposed for an early prediction of coastal tsunami height around Kapakkam using a set of empirical equations. To formulate the mathematical expressions, a number of events have been simulated numerically using an efficient code namely Delft3D and then the results are fitted using a Least Square method. For the assessment of the accuracy of the proposed method, it is tested with a few historic events. The results indicate a reasonably good agreement between the calculated values and the literature values.
