On-site inspection (OSI) serves as the ultimate verification measure within the framework of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Conducting OSIs comes with inherent challenges, primarily operational/logistical and technical. The time-sensitive nature of these inspections emphasizes the importance of sticking to defined timelines to gather evidence before nuclear explosion indicators fade. This paper elucidates the multifaceted challenges faced in executing OSIs, delineating inherent complexities and additional challenges encountered in tropical mountainous areas. During an OSI, the Inspection Team (IT) faces unfamiliar circumstances, operational constraints, and technical obstacles within the confines of limited personnel and resources. Identifying signatures and observables in tropical areas presents unique difficulties due to dense vegetation and rainfall, impacting GPS signal reception and geophysical techniques. The dense foliage and high relief obstruct aerial and ground-based observations, complicating geophysical methods and environmental sampling. Moreover, logistical challenges such as poor infrastructure and health risks from infectious diseases further complicate OSI operations in tropical regions. Proactive measures are essential to effectively tackle these challenges. This involves careful planning, capacity-building initiatives, and the development of tailored methodologies to navigate the complexities of tropical environments. Collaboration with local stakeholders, technological innovation, and strategic adaptation of OSI protocols are crucial for enhancing operational effectiveness and ensuring compliance with the CTBT. In conclusion, addressing OSI challenges in tropical regions is pivotal for global nuclear non-proliferation efforts.
